from DNA to Diversity by Sean Carroll
Dr. Sean Carroll will give a lecture at the Bell Museum on May 15 based on his new book "Remarkable Creatures: Epic Adventures for the Search for Origins of Species." Admission is free, seating is first come, first served. The talk begins at 7:00 pm.
Carroll's work on evolutionary development (commonly abbreviated to evo-devo), where evolution is studied from the point of fertilization forward, places him at the forefront of his field. In this field, organisms are studied for genetic links; recent studies in the field have revealed connections not just in genetic links between animals as a result of evolution but also how ecology can play a role in evolutionary development. While new genes are developed by taking information from old genes, evolution alters the developmental processes to create new structures from the old gene networks.
Carroll has authored five books on evolutionary biology, including from DNA to Diversity and Endless Forms Most Beautiful. NOVA is developing a special to mark the 150 year anniversary of Darwin's birth based on Carroll's works. Carroll is the chosen commencement speaker at the University of Minnesota this year, and was awarded the Viktor Hamburger Outstanding Educator prize.
