A video posted to YouTube shows a UFO hovering in the twilight skies of Sacramento, filmed by iPhone through the lens of a telescope. As the witness turned away for a moment, then retrained the camera on the unidentified flying object, it appears to have exploded in space.
What is it?
The video, published on Dec. 31, 2012, is a news report broadcast by the CBS affiliate station in Sacramento. In it, correspondent Cody Stark explains how a viewer, Elijah Prychodzko, submitted the video to the station through Twitter.
CBS video technicians were able to enhance the segment and it does indeed seem to show a large object, hovering in the sky, intact one moment, apparently imploded the next.
The enhancement also reveals a strange object "orbiting" the UFO just prior to the event.
A scientist was consulted, but had no ready answer for the phenomenon. Reporters speculated it could be a trick of the light, but the object does appear to have exploded, with debris emanating from its center.
This is one of the strangest events filmed in 2012, and it was unique enough for CBS News to file a report.
It looks like UFO hunting in 2013 has started, literally, with a bang.
Here's the video.
