Lesley Messer’s article about Candace Caron Bure as a submissive wife appeared in Yahoo News. Naturally, anything that smacks of conservative or Christian will receive an immediate criticism. Here is an explanation what it means to be a submissive wife.
1. This lifestyle is not recommended for any woman, only Christian women. Such a choice is based on biblical principles. It would be unwise for a woman to attempt this if the rest of her life is inconsistent with the Bible.
2. Consider living conditions 2,000 years ago when the Apostle Paul wrote words of submission. (Colossians 3:18) Women were literal possessions. They had no legal rights or form of recourse. A husband could at any moment be rid of her without even going through a court proceeding.
3. When the Apostle Paul told women to make decisions about her marital relationship, it elevated her to a higher plan of honor and respect. His encouragement was one to offer greater self-respect and self-confidence.
4. In Colossians 3: 19 Paul told the husband to love his wife without an adverse attitude toward her. This instruction leveled the playing field for both partners. In Ephesians 5:21 Paul said that everyone should submit to each other. Therefore, concerning submission, the road runs both ways.
5. If any objection can be raised, it should be what Paul told the husband. Paul expected the husband to have agape or divine love toward his wife. That is unconditional love. That love is decided no matter what complaints can be said of the wife. Love her anyway and regardless of anything.
6. When Paul wrote letters to individuals or churches in the New Testament, it was to solve a problem. In the case of the churches at Ephesus and Colossae there must have been confusion, disorientation in relationships, and emotional turmoil such as bitterness and strife. It made sense to take the woman out of the picture. This solved half the problem immediately.
Two people cannot drive the car. In the same way, at the end of the road someone must make the decisions for harmony to be in the home. Look at today’s society. The husband and father is practically excluded from the scene. The man needs to stand tall and the woman must support his efforts. Submit is to support.
