Sarah Ward, an expert in executive function therapy, will offer a practical workshop for parents, teachers, and therapists at Piedmont High School on Wednesday, November 9. Ms. Ward specializes in evaluation, treatment, and case management of children, adolescents, and adults with developmental and acquired brain-based learning difficulties and behavioral problems.
Executive function skills -- the ability to anticipate, prioritize, plan, and organize -- are essential in everyday life and especially in school. Students need these skills to process and comprehend reading and writing assignments, to manage homework, complete long-term projects, take tests, participate in extracurricular activities, and to foster and sustain social relationships.
This workshop is for parents, regular and special ed teachers, social workers, speech-language pathologists, school administrators, psychologists, occupational therapists, education therapists, and other professionals. Topics will include the importance of executive function skills for academic performance, strategies to improve motivation and task initiation, approaches to teaching time management skills, and ways to encourage self-management regarding homework and personal belongings.
