We at Jacksonville Golf Examiner recently visited the site of the Honda Classic: PGA National's Champion course, located at 400 Avenue of the Champions, Palm Beach Gardens, FL. We were surprised at the playability of the course for mid-level players. Just because they host a PGA Tour event at this course does not mean that the course is impossible. In fact, the Champion starts out with some very reasonable holes including the short par 4 first hole and relatively short par 5 third. The real challenge of the course comes late in the back nine at the infamous Bear Trap. Even though this difficult section of the course only technically includes 15, 16, and 17 the entire finishing stretch increases in difficulty starting on the 14th hole. Regardless, this The Champion remains playable for even the most average player and was in great shape. In addition to The Champion course, PGA National offers impressive practice facilities and four other courses to try: The Palmer, The Squire, The Haig, and the Estates.
Aside from the golf, PGA National is a fully outfitted resort with multiple restaurants and a fantastic spa complete with imported waters from around the world for soaking. If you're in Jacksonville and looking to get away for a quick week/weekend of golf and relaxation now is a great time to visit PGA National. The resort is now offering a Fall Escape and Play package featuring $500 of additional value for patrons. The package runs from October 16, 2011 through January 12, 2012 and prices start at $89 per night, per person. More specifically, the Fall Escape and Play includes the following:
