Come learn something this Saturday, September 3rd about the pioneering contributions of Muslim scholars to the fields of science and technology at the California premiere of “Islamic Science Rediscovered: Celebrating a Golden Age of Science and Technology.” The exhibition seeks to “challenge misconceptions” and “illuminate diversity” by exploring the Islamic Golden Age (c. 8th to 18th centuries CE), an aspect of World History that is often disregarded by western history books. Learn about the aviator Abbas ibn Firnas, whose flights in a one-man glider preceded the Wright Brothers by a thousand years. Explore the contributions of Al-Jazari, whose accomplishments in the field of engineering were documented in the Book of Knowledge of Ingenious Mechanical Devices nearly 250 years before Leonardo da Vinci was born. Over 40 interactive stations exhibit inventions by Muslim innovators in a variety of fields, including architecture, the arts, astronomy, mathematics, and medicine.
Are you a teacher? This exhibit is a great opportunity to expose your students to an aspect of history not often discussed in the classroom. Saturday September 3rd and Saturday September 24th from 10:00am to 11:30am, come by the Tech Museum for a customized open house tour for teachers interested in organizing a field trip. See the Education page on the Tech Museum for more information.
