This week you will get the opportunity to see one of the most popular operas of all time. It is Mozart’s The Magic Flute and it is coming to a theater near you.
See The Magic Flute in high definition as it is transmitted to participating theaters on December 21 and performed by the Met Opera. This 2004 Julie Taymor production has been condensed to 100 minutes and is sung in English. With a ticket price of $12.50 per person, this event is an accessible option for families wishing to expose their children to this classic work of art.
While this version has been criticized for the costumes and sets overwhelming Mozart’s classic work, it received high acclaim from the younger audiences in attendance.
In a New York Times review of the 2006 transmission of The Magic Flute, one young audience member says, ‘ “I don’t think it’s going to be the best opera I’m going to go to in my life.” What he meant, explaining further, was, “I’m, like, going to go to others that will be even better.” ‘
While the costuming and puppets may be a bit much for some, many will enjoy Ms Taymor’s approach. She is best known as winning two Tony Awards for the Lion King: one for best direction of a musical and one for best costuming.
The Magic Flute is a fantastical opera about good and evil. Its allegorical story recounts human education from superstition to enlightenment. A fun, yet serious opera that has been retold many times in several ways, don’t miss Julie Taymor’s production this Wednesday, 6:30pm, at a theater near you.
Participating theaters in the St Paul/Minneapolis Metro Area include: Showplace Theatre, 1623 West End Blvd, St Louis Park, Brooklyn Center 20, 6420 Camden Ave N, Minneapolis, Eagan 16, 2055 Cliff Rd, Eagan, and AMC Eden Prairie 18, 8251 Flying Cloud Drive, Eden Prairie.
