Best Buy debuts its revolutionary free mobile application called Best Buy Movie Mode with the theatrical release of Despicable Me in RealD and digital 3-D, available nationwide starting July 9, 2010. (Check here on how to get free tickets to see Despicable Me.) Its goal is to enhance the movie experience both in theaters and at home by adding interactive content that further engages the audience. "The innovative technology, unique to Best Buy, provides us with an opportunity to evolve with customers into the growing digitally connected world," said Chris Homeister, senior vice president and general manager of the home entertainment group at Best Buy.

In conjunction with Universal Pictures, "The Minionator" was created for the Best Buy Movie Mode to translate what the little hilarious yellow Minions say during the 3-D theatrical end credits of Despicable Me. Additionally, the application will dim the phone's screen, silence the ringer and discourage any texting to generate a positive movie viewing experience. Until now, there has not been any mobile application that gives you an incentive to make your phone movie-friendly.

Aside from serving as a Minion language translator, Best Buy Movie Mode will help you locate theaters that are showing Despicable Me in 3-D and Best Buy stores. Also, there will be bonus digital content available exclusively to Best Buy Movie Mode users that will be unlocked after the end of Despicable Me. Best Buy will be releasing later this year its store exclusive Despicable Me DVD and Blu-ray releases that can be used with "The Minionator" to translate the Minion language throughout the entire movie.

The free Best Buy Movie Mode mobile application is available now for iPhone, iPod touch (2nd generation), iPod touch (3rd generation), iPad, Android, Blackberry and Windows Mobile. The iPhone and iPod touch require iOS 3.1.3 or later. Unfortunately, Best Buy Movie Mode does not support CDMA Blackberry devices at this time. The application will currently work with non-CDMA (including AT&T and T-Mobile) Curve (8300, 8310, 8320, 8330, 8350, 8520, 8530, 8900) and Bold (9000, 9700) models. The Windows Mobile version is in Beta, but you will soon be able to enjoy "The Minionator" and unlock the bonus content. You can text MINION to 332211 to find out more info or text ME to 332211 to download the application directly to your phone. (Message and data rates may apply.)

Remember to keep Best Buy Movie Mode updated to ensure you always enjoy the full experience and look out for future movies enhanced with Best Buy Movie Mode.

How to use Best Buy Movie Mode

  1. Install Best Buy Movie Mode.
  2. Use the Best Buy Movie Mode mobile application to quickly locate a movie theater near you that is showing Despicable Me in RealD and digital 3-D. (Here are some New York City locations or search for a location near you.)
  3. Upon entering the movie theater showing Despicable Me, leave your phone on.
  4. Activate Best Buy Movie Mode and select "Enter Movie Mode" before the movie starts. It will listen to the movie soundtrack and sync with the movie screen via specific audio cues. (Note: For iPhone users, please put the phone into silent mode first before starting the application.)
  5. If you activate Best Buy Movie Mode after Despicable Me as begun, it is okay as long as there is ample time left prior to the movie's end credits. If you activate it too late, your experience may be less than optimal.
  6. Sit back, relax and watch the movie.
  7. It will vibrate to let you know when to take your phone out so you can enjoy a whole new experience during the end credits.
  8. Unlock new content once Despicable Me is over.
  9. Keep the application updated and look out for future movies enhanced with Best Buy Movie Mode.
  10. Purchase the Best Buy exclusive Despicable Me DVD or Blu-ray once it is available to enjoy the movie all over again and have even more fun with the Minions!

    Great info!
As a fan of pure cinema and great cinematography it is not a trend I will be jumping on. I remember when Jon Stewart made that joke at Oscars "You've never really experienced Lawrence of Arabia until you have seen it on a cell phone".
