For those who have been engaged in American or European flower arrangement and feel a little bit bored with conventional floral designs, another type of floral decoration or a different approach is recommended.
Namely as far as they follow the conventional way of designing or so long as they stick to the arranging format/method developed by the same group or organization, it is difficult to make a breakthrough to make an initial step towards a new style of flower arrangement.
It is not the subject of this article to talk about any revolutionary type of floral decorations but a sort of suggestion or advice is made as stated below:
In the world of floral designs, there exist two of major groups. One is European or American style of arrangement and the other one is Japanese traditional arrangement called Ikebana. Between these two method of designing, we can find a substantial difference not only in the history and background but also the way of arranging and the concept behind that as well as the type of fresh elements and tools used for arranging.
The same can be said for those who have been working only on Japanese Ikebana arrangement without having any experiences in European or American floral designs. Unless they know outside of their own world, they cannot mature greatly even in terms of culture and art.
People who experienced the culture different from their original one or people who know the difference of culture between their native country and the rest of the world are well balanced and it is possible to adopt and acquire new concept and philosophy from various sources, which makes it easy for them to develop, modify and promote the one they own.
Concretely speaking, people who are familiar with more than one culture, language, system or even floral art, they have much more possibilities of picking up better, superior or more favorite points and sometimes blending both features to improve, modify, develop and make it better. If you already have a decent level of European floral arranging skills, you can easily earn skills of Ikebana arrangement. And you MAY be able to mix both ways of arrangements to create your own original style of design you have never experienced before.
Ikebana arrangement is often done featuring line flowers (or line elements) while many of European floral designs are based on mass arrangement. For Ikebana arrangements, they often use Kenzan (frog: needlepoint holder to hold flowers on a container) and Suiban (flat and shallow type container specifically designed for Ikebana). These tools help make Ikebana’s own style of arranging that cannot be done with European floral designs. Not only tools for arranging but also the type of fresh elements used for design are different. You may find it quite fresh to you and many people feel fascinated with their new findings.
California Flower Art Academy has been teaching European floral designs as well as Japanese Ikebana in the San Francisco Bay Area since 1990 as a floral school certified by Flower Decorators Association (Tokyo Japan).
