The Tempe Center for the Arts (TCA) shows no sign of slowing down one bit this summer. In addition to all the great performing arts, the TCA summer programs will include an art exhibition geared to the whole family. Summer of Love: Family, Friendship and Devotion will open this Friday and will be on display through September 20. There will also be a series of fun family oriented art workshops held in conjunction with the exhibition every Saturday through August 9.

Summer of Love features colorful and endearing artworks created by local and nationally recognized artists including Gene Almendinger, Marco Albarran, Denise Currier, Esmeralda Delaney, Wendy Hodgson, Molly Idle, Sandra Luerhsen, Frank Ybarra, as well as art students from Tempe high schools. Works include ceramic sculptures, botanical prints and drawings, original children’s book illustrations and contemporary paintings and installations. The exhibition will also feature historical and contemporary displays about symbols of love by the Desert Botanical Garden Archives, Tempe History Museum and Bobbie’s Flowers of Tempe. Everyone is invited to the opening reception on June 20, 6-9 p.m.

Kids and their families can take refuge from the heat and create something beautiful in the Gallery at TCA on most Saturdays from noon-2 p.m. during the free Walk-in Family Workshops. The workshops will be presented by local artists and will be inspired by theSummer of Love exhibition. Artist and TCA staff member Ron Bimrose will lead the first workshop on June 21. Participants will have fun making a collage using construction paper and recycled magazines. All ages are welcome and there’s no need to RSVP. As the name suggests, just walk in and enjoy.

Gallery hours are: 10 a.m.- 6 p.m., Tuesday and Thursday; 10 a.m.- 7 p.m., Wednesday and Friday; 11 a.m.- 6 p.m., Saturday; open Sundays based on performance schedule.
