Experience Spanish history in a glass

Indulge your palate with a couple of uncommon Lo Nuevo varietals from Spain tonight.

Lo Nuevo – a new brand label meaning “The New’ – refers to modern style wines crafted from ancient vines. Both albarino and garnacha varietals retail for a sweet $9.99.

The 2011 albarino selection is an ancient white grape of Iberia. The Rias Balxas, in the northwest region of Spain, is close to the sea and benefits from modern winter climate and cooling summer winds. It provides a strong maritime influence that is responsible for the brisk, refreshing acidity of its wines.

Here’s what is in the bottle with the eye-catching golden rose label: In the glass, the wine is a pale yellow but the aromas will capture your imagination with white flowers and ripe apricots.

The juicy peach and white stone fruit flavors are crisp and clean with lingering freshness.

The vintner’s red 2010 garnacha “Sorbo a Sorbo” (“Sip Sip”) is made from old vines in Spain’s high Calatayud elevation. Warm, dry summers and cold winters is the perfect climate for the ripe, mountain fruit to develop.

The wine is delicious and bold with an elegant fanfare. Intense, lush aromas of ripe red fruit are seductive. The reward is ripe cherry, raspberry and currant flavors and a lingering finish.

Pour this with tapas and spicy seafood paella.
