Beginning this week, the Phoenix Art Museum will have the honor of presenting Hollywood Costume: Celebrating More than 100 Years of Cinema Storytelling. The Phoenix Art Museum will be the only institution on the West Coast to host the exhibition, so now might be your only chance to see these amazing pieces in person. The exhibition, organized by the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, explores the role that costume design plays in creating the magic of the movies.

With more than one hundred of the world’s most iconic movie costumes spanning the last century of filmmaking, this is sure to be an experience that the whole family can enjoy. The exhibition offers a rare opportunity to view costumes that have never been seen outside of private and studio archival collections. The exhibiting collection includes pieces from The Wizard of Oz, My Fair Lady, Superman, Titanic, Harry Potter, and the Dark Knight Rises, to name a few.

In designing this exhibition, the curators have done their best to bring visitors into an authentic movie creating experience, displaying the costumes on a set resembling an old movie sound stage. As explained by Dennita Sewell (Curator of Fashion Design) in an interview for the Phoenix Art Museum website, the exhibition is a “dynamic installation featuring technology, projected heads, movie clips….and interviews between directors and designers.” There was even an original soundtrack created especially for this exhibition by a professional studio. All of this detail was carefully crafted to help visitors fully understand the setting in which these costumes were brought to life, and the contribution that the designers themselves make in the development of your favorite onscreen characters.

This is a specially ticketed event, and reservations are suggested. Tickets are $20 for adults, $10 for children ages 6-17, and free for children under age 6. Tickets are available at the box office every 30 minutes during exhibition hours, and the last entry time is one hour before the exhibition closes.
