This weekend at the Cleo Parker Robinson theatre a collaborative, multi-media, dance production, “Black Listed”, will be presented. “Black Listed” addresses hardships, difficult times and the survival and triumph of the spirit. The concept here is that we all have own personal crosses to bear and it is that commonality that brings us together as a community. Human nature compels us to rise from despair and trials in our lives and it is just that rising which makes us stronger.
Within this performance there are several choreographic voices and a spoken word artist. Each collaborator has created a piece that speaks on survival and victories. The subjects investigated are of the adult nature and so you should be aware that the themes of the works are real, hard to hear about and can be a bit disturbing. The stories that are being share deal with rape, molestation, sexual identity, substance abuse, relationship dependency, gang violence, loss, mental imbalance, and physical limitations. And, even while these are tough subjects, the notion is also to bring light to the darkness, while also serving to be a therapeutic and cathartic experience.
Black Listed – a dance collaborative featuring works by artistic directors Katie Swenson and Cecelia Jones. Other contributors include Ray Maestas, Shanna Woods, Jerod Sarlo, Lisa Engelken, Rennie Harris, Devin Baker, Edgar Page, Lady Speech Sankofa, Jeffory Elliott, Rita Corey, Larkin Poynton and Fate Rokz.
