Expendables 2: Bruce Willis, Arnold Schwarzenegger join Sly Stallone film

Bruce Willis. Arnold Schwarzenegger. Sylvester Stallone. No, you’re not having an ‘80s action movie flashback. Willis and Schwarzenegger have both signed on to take roles in “The Expendables 2,” the sequel to the Stallone’s 2010 movie that featured aging action stars.

The two stars, who appeared in cameos in the first movie, signed up for more “substantial” roles, reported Deadline on Sept. 6.

In “The Expendable 2,” Stallone will reprise his dual roles as producer and star. Stallone will not direct this time around, with Simon West – “The Mechanic” and “Tomb Raider” – sitting in the director’s chair.

As if that trio of action stars weren’t heart-stopping enough, Chuck Norris and Jean Claude Van Damme have agreed to be in the sequel.

Also joining the non-stop action fun for “The Expendables 2” are other action star icons and co-stars from the first movie: Jason Statham, Dolph Lundgren, Mickey Rourke and Jet Li.

“The Expendables” first movie features a group of elite mercenaries on a mission to overthrow a Latin American dictator. The plot, as with its cast, was a send-up and homage to the blockbuster action films of the 1980s and early 1990s. The movie took in $275 million in the worldwide box office, making it a commercial success and justifying a sequel.

It’s a busy time for “classic” action stars, especially Willis and Statham. Willis is also scheduled for “Die Hard 5” and the sequel to “Red.” And Statham’s film “Killer Elite," with Clive Owen and Robert De Niro, is slated for a Sept. 23, 2011 release.

There’s been nothing specific released about the plot of “The Expendables 2” but that’s not really the point, is it? There’s sure to be weapons and wisecracks, explosions and action.

The movie is tentatively scheduled for release Aug. 17, 2012.

When “The Expendables 2” is released, Pittsburgh movie-goers will be able to catch it at the AMC Loews Waterfront 22, with tickets available for online purchase at Fandango, as well as at SouthSide Works Cinemaand Waterworks Cinema 10.
