On Wednesday, Juy 27, a group of teachers from across the country visited Essex.. They visited several sites along the Back River watershed to observe and learn what is being done to clean-up and revitalize the river and ultimately the Chesapeake Bay. These teachers plan to incorporate what they see and learn into their 2011-2012 classroom curriculum.
Dale Bergerhofer, a Kansas School Designer with Expeditionary Learning (EL), was a staff leader for the 30+ math and science teachers visiting the trash boom that is currently located at Diamond Point. “We are part of a group of 70 teachers visiting Baltimore County today,” Dale said. “The area is rich in environmental and aquatic lessons these teachers will be able to take into their classrooms, incorporate into their curriculum; and ,these lessons will translate into experiments and field trips for their students.”
“These teachers are part of the movement for a national school reform model. They are spending time this summer as part of Expeditionary Learning/Outward Bound program. They want to learn a different and interesting way to teach their students and keep them engaged in current issues that will last them a life time,” said Anna Switzer, another Expeditionary Learning staff member with the group.
The group met with representatives from the Department of Environmental Protection and Management (DEPRM) and from the Back River Restoration Committee (BRRC). A brief overview was provided on what the BRRC has accomplished over the past two years and how DEPRM has provided support and guidance.
