For under $10,000 you can hang with exotics on the track or strip. We all want Ferrari’s, Lamborghini’s, and Corvettes. The truth is that not everyone can afford them. However, most people can afford Subaru and Mitsubishi. Would it surprise you to know that some of these cars can be made to be as quick around the track as the infamous exotics?
Of course we have all seen the typical “ricer” making noise down the road. Most people think, “All show no go!” For some cars, that is completely the case and others completely wrong. Take for example the all-wheel drive imports such as Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution and Subaru Impreza WRX STi. Both of these cars are four door sedans that if properly modified and tuned, can compete bumper for bumper with $100,000+ exotic sports cars.
The Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution line up is the cheapest vehicle to squeeze horse power out of. With easy bolt on modifications, this car can tote up to 400 horse power and still maintain daily drivability. The Subaru Impreza WRX Sti’s take a little more work but can also reach the same power levels and beyond. Subaru’s require more work and tuning than its counterpart Evo, so naturally the enthusiasts choice becomes Mitsubishi.
Not all AWD vehicles are created equal. The Mitsubishi uses a front wheel drive based differential with horizontal drive shaft coming out of the inline four cylinder engine while the Subaru models use center differential similar to that of rear wheel drive with longitudinal drive shafts coming out of a horizontally opposed, boxer style four cylinder engine. The main difference between the two is balance and weight. The Mitsubishi’s drive line is a very forward heavy vehicle while Subaru maintains equilibrium with most even weight distribution through out driveline and engine. Which is better? It depends on your driving style.

For under $10,000 you can pick up one of these cars and modify it for an additional expense to be as fast as exotics. The Mitsubishi Lancer Evolutions are the cheapest to modify, with the biggest bang for your buck but lack in weight distribution balance. The Subaru Impreza WRX Sti takes more effort to create power, but is perfectly balanced. If you want to drive fast in a straight line for the least amount of investment, Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution is the car for you. Get the Lancer on a track, and they tend to nose plow. If you like track style performance, and going fast around curves the Subaru Impreza WRX Sti is the better choice if you don’t mind spending a few extra dollars on performance parts.
