Pole dancing, is a occupational advent, in the adult entertainment industry. The job title related to "Exotic Dancer," in general, congers up two very distinct images, or stereotypes.
In general, it harbors a negative or unsavory reputation, based on a seedy and unscrupulous demographic of persons, operating in the industry. Some may deem the industry as a vehicle to exploit and objectify women.
Moving away from the stereotypes, and looking at the athletic advancements, there is a stark similarity to gymnastics, in the execution of "dance" maneuvers.
In 2008, a global competition commenced to rank dancers on their skill-set and execution of maneuvers. The dancers use a "diagonal pole" much in the way, that is similar to how a gymnast uses the parallel bars.
The US Pole Dance Federation (USPDF) was founded in the beginning of 2008 by Anna Grundstrom and Wendy Traskos. It’s the first organization in the US to host professional pole dancing competitions.
The International Pole Dance Fitness Association, (IPDAF) established in 2007, promotes the fitness aspect of the occupation. The organization's goal and mission is as follows:
- Promote Pole Dancing a legitimate form of fitness program
- Act as supervisory body for the sport
- Organise the International Pole Championships (IPC) annually
- Train and accredit instructors to the highest standards Maintain an accessible record of qualified and established pole dancing studios and instructors globally
Annual competitions and international retreats are held to offer a venue, and workshop, for those dancers who elevate the "sport fitness" to the next level, and beyond.
