FERRARI RUMORS SWIRL ABOUT COMPANY PLANS TO MAKE FOUR DOOR EXOTIC SPORTSCAR
Special thanks to friends of the Fireball Run Adventure Rally for giving us the heads up about this story.
There have been many supercar rumors in the auto industry that exotic car companies like Ferrari and Lamborghini are planning to make 4 door exotic cars to meet the lifestyle demands of modern day.
So far, sports car companies like Porsche and luxury sports car makers like BMW have been successful marketing fast driving SUV vehicles to the American marketplace.
While loftier 4x4 cars like the BMW X5 and the Porsche Cayenne have been successfully sold to affluent mothers and fathers of the modern luxury marketplace, cars designed to have more of a low sports car appeal [like the BMW X3 and *cough* Panamera] have had a harder time being accepted as a "trendy vehicle to buy today".
Why? Well, there is some truth to the idea that a car with four doors really is a sedan, while an SUV with 4x4 capabilities really is more of a truck. What's left then for the definition of a sports car (one specifically designed to handle the road) is really a coupe -- as driving is (and historically has been) it's dedicated purpose as a vehicle.
Coupes are not truly designed for long distance travel (overall) and have never been used simply as a daily driver made to haul stuff.
Throw in rumors that cars that are big enough to allow drivers to make all their convenience stops at Target, the grocery store, the local mall, and luxury boutiques are actually more eco friendly as they let owners plan a variety of stops in a loop and you have a serious problem with the concept of a two seater exotic. [Because such a car uses a huge amount of gas while giving it's operator about as much cargo space as a smart car or mini with only the sound and sensation fo driving it being its benefit.]
FERRARI CEO REVEALS INCONVENIENT TRUTH ABOUT GREEN EXOTICS AND FOUR DOOR EXOTIC CARS
Take for example this breaking news about Ferrari -- who, when the Chief Executive was asked if and when Ferrari will be producing a four door version of their classic exotic, his answer was more than a resounding no.
Autoblog reports:
Aston Martin has done it. Porsche has too. Even Lamborghini toyed with the idea in the form of the Estoque concept. But according to chief executive Amedeo Felisa, Ferrari will never follow its rivals in making a four-door model.
The closest we'll get, points out Felisa, is the Maserati Quattroporte, the four-door sports sedan from Ferrari's Modenese sister-company, which is set to gain a baby brother in the near future. Maranello once considered the idea of a four-door with the 1980 Pinin show car, but as close as it may have come, the concept never made it to production.
Regarding the current announcements by Ferrari that they are moving forward with green exotic car engine technology with enthusiasm and to be trend setters in the automotive industry, it was a real let down to hear the following news from the exotic car company as well as knowing there is no future four door model, as the Ferrari 612 Scaglietti -- no matter how lovely -- is still a bit too awkward to take another couple out to dinner if ladies are in skirts and men are well dressed [as climbing in and out of the couple while making a red carpet appearance is difficult if one seeks to appear refined and graceful in a way that is simultaneous if you happen to be the lucky passenger guest].
Autoblog revealed the inconvenient truth Ferrari expressed about going green -- based on the current management philosophy at Ferrari:
Addressing the notion that Ferrari once swore it would never make a hybrid or use start-stop technology – both of which are in the pipeline from Maranello currently – Felisa responded that both these measures were required by government regulation, but that nobody's forcing them to make a sedan.
Even a somewhat disappointed sounding Autoblog wrote, "Well, there you have it."
Ferrari, it seems, is planning to base the next generation of new Ferrari sales resting on the laurels and design ideas it's founding fathers dreamed up early in the 20th century -- and the Baby Boomer demographic of current owners can relax knowing Ferrari will still be making those horse sounding vehicles they grew up loving best.
EDITORIAL NOTE: For the record -- the chief complaint exotic car owners have about the idea of green exotic cars is that hybrid and electric vehicles barely make any sound. Listen to the video below to understand why giving up the old carbon based fuel system technology will be such a huge driving sensation loss.
