Exercise and relaxation prevents migraines as well as medication, study reports

Utah residents who have experienced a migraine understand that it severely limits your activities. According to some estimates, approximately 17 percent of individuals suffer from migraines. This indicates that more than 469,000 individuals in Utah are potentially affected by migraines.

Common symptoms of migraines include a relentless throbbing pain, sensitivity to light and blurred vision. You may experience an aura – zigzag lines or spots in your vision, dizziness or ringing in your ears – before onset of pain.

Conventional medicine generally prescribes medications for both pain and the prevention of migraines, while holistic practitioners focus on avoiding trigger foods and supporting your body in its effort to avoid migraines with medicinal plants.

Now researchers at the University of Gothenburg in Sweden have discovered that exercise is just as effective as drugs in the prevention of migraines. The study is published online ahead of print in the journal Cephalalgia.

The study authors divided 91 migraine patients into three groups. One third of participants were asked to participate in 40 minutes of aerobic exercise three times per week, another third were involved with relaxation exercises and the final third were prescribed the drug topiramate.

Remarkably, researchers observed that all three groups experienced a reduction in migraine headaches.

Researchers concluded that there is no difference between the preventative effects of the three treatments and suggested that exercise and relaxation could be considered effective alternatives to the drugs for the prevention of migraines.
