Transformers was the big summer ride at Universal Studios Florida, but the park had another opening that was more low-key yet just as impressive in terms of detail. The town of Springfield has sprung up around the Simpsons ride, adding another attraction based on Kang and Kodos, plus games and a variety of iconic fast food as seen on the hit Fox show.
Executive Producer Mike West recently took the media on a quick tour of Springfield at Universal Orlando Resort now that the entire area is open. It's populated with walk-around characters, plus life-sized models of favorites like Chief Wiggum, Barney, and Duff Man. Iconic spots include the Duff Brewery, Lard Lad Donuts, and of course Moe's Tavern. Go inside and you'll find a working Love Tester and a phone that rings periodically. Answer it and you'll hear a familiar voice on the other end.
In the video, West discusses just how much attention was paid to keeping the details authentic. The new area has the feel of stepping into a cartoon, with painstakingly recreated characters and places all rendered in bright cartoon colors. It was developed in close collaboration with Simpsons creator Matt Groening, who gave his seal of approval to this real version of Springfield.
