Season 9 of "Supernatural" will not return until 2014 and fans are still reeling from the shocking death that occurred on the mid-season finale. Now viewers want to know what will happen next. On Dec. 19, Entertainment Weekly spoke to executive producer Jeremy Carver about what to expect when the show returns.
Warning: If you do not want to know "Supernatural" season 9 spoilers, then stop reading.
On the mid-season finale, viewers had to say farewell to another character. This time it was Kevin Tran, but will he return? After all, other deceased characters have come back. Jeremy said that this is goodbye to Kevin, but did leave an opening for him to possibly return in the future if it fits into the storyline.
The executive producer also spoke about what this means for the characters from here on out. He said that Dean has made two major decisions. One was when he convinced Sam not to close the gates of Hell and then when he tricked his brother into accepting Ezekiel, but as fans know it was really Gadreel. Carver said that both of those decisions will be what is pushing Dean in the second half of season 9. He is going to do whatever he can to get Gadreel out of Sam, but that is going not mean he is going to have to make some alliances and some of them will be with enemies.
Now that Kevin Tran has been murdered, it is going to affect Dean profoundly. He does usually blame himself for things and the death of his friend is no exception. He will be struggling with his grief and guilt for the first few episodes when "Supernatural" returns, but it won't be the focus of the episodes. Jeremy explained,
"And I think we’ll find him struggling with this for quite a few episodes. Now, I think things get serious, tense, sad and people get angry. But I don’t think in any shape or form that things get mired in sadness. It’s not like we’ve thrown a 600-pound weight on this. Things are kept moving and brisk. You can throw a pity party all you’d like but there’s always a monster around the corner waiting to be killed. The last thing we’re going to do is, whether he wants to or not, no one is going to get a chance to drown his sorrows. That’s where the unlikely alliances come in and people pulling Dean out of this come into play. They keep things moving and keep it interesting, compelling."
As for Gadreel, the executive producer said that viewers are going to discover that the angel is far more complex than what has been previously revealed. It should be interesting to find out what fans will see from the character.
Speaking of angels, Castiel has his powers back and he is going to have to find his place in the battle, but it might not be where he thought it would be. It is going to force him to make decisions that he never thought he would have to make.
There are going to be some stand alone episodes in the second half of season 9. There will be a combination of introducing new characters and seeing the return of others. For one, Dean is going to come across Cain and that is going to have a huge impact on the rest of the season... and throughout the series. The Ghostfacers are also returning in what is being described as a really fun and emotional episode.
"Supernatural" season 9 returns Jan. 14.
