Many times we've seen stories of well-meaning so-called "animal lovers" getting in way over their heads when they try to help too many animals at once. It's hard to turn an animal away, but sometimes, there is a fate worse than death. Animals who are given a humane euthanasia and sent peacefully off to sleep are sometimes better off than those left to languish in conditions that are less than ideal. It's sometimes easy to see how a good intention can turn bad very quickly when there are no resources to help the hundreds of animals in need. Many can relate to a person in that situation.
What's a little more difficult to forgive is the intentional withholding of resources meant for the animals. Palena Rae Dorsey was booked into the St. Lucie jail last night, February 4th, just about the time everyone else was getting ready to watch the Giants play New England. She was charged with First Degree Grand Theft and is being held on a $75,000 bond for stealing money that was meant to help the animals.
Back in April, authorities investigated charges of animal cruelty when The Humane Society of St. Lucie County officials visited the site and found evidence of deplorable living conditions. This, despite the fact that a benefactress, Laura Linscott, left $575,000 to ensure the animals were well cared for. Authorities believe Dorsey used the money for personal expenses instead of caring for the animals. Shallow graves were found on the property along with sick and dying animals. The animals were taken away from the so-called sanctuary in April and placed with other rescue facilities.
