Things got a bit heated at the Green Festival (www.greenfestivals.org) in Los Angeles over the weekend when a vegan activist interrupted a keynote session about "The Future of Green Media" featuring actor/activist Ed Begley Jr. and his family.
"You are a hypocrite, you are talking about the environment and you eat meat," said the man wearing a shirt emblazoned with the word "VEGAN" across the front.
"A meat-based diet is the number one contributing factor to global warming and the destruction of our planet," the man said at the packed session with about 200 people in attendance.
Ed Begley Jr. is a long devout vegan, although he admitted that after nine years he has recently eaten some salmon, and always makes sure it is wild.
His wife, Rachelle Carson-Begley, said she is mostly vegetarian and loves the vegan restaurants in Studio City, Calif. where they live that Ed frequents, but she does occasionally eat meat.
She told Examiner, "This guy has been following me around a lot—he wants me to be vegan. I'm not sure what he thinks he can do that Ed hasn't already tried."

At the seminar was actor Raphael Sbarge ("Once Upon a Time") and Xav Dubois of evox Television, as well as the Begley's 14-year-old daughter Hayden, who is also featured in "On Begley Street"-a comical series with the first four episodes now seen on evox. (evoxtelevision.com)
Xav Dubois, who first met the Begleys at the Green Festival last year, offered a measured response to the man creating the outburst, and said that although the activist was obviously right with some of the facts he spouted during his impassioned outburst, "You may want to discover a new way to communicate."
Begley, who acknowledged the Studio City Community Activist Examiner on stage, and thanked the California Institute of Contemporary Arts (www.cica.us.com) for helping "On Begley Street" with a grant, did not weigh in on the outburst.
"My wife can pretty much take care of herself," the actor quipped to Examiner afterward. "She handled it beautifully."
