When the word spread that Kim Kardashian lost 70 pounds on the famous Atkins diet, some would-be weight loss winners had an important question: Does this plan work for vegans and vegetarians?
We decided to investigate and enjoyed an exclusive interview with Colette Heimowitz, VP Nutrition & Education, Atkins Nutritionals, Inc. She's the author of an upcoming book all about weight loss on Atkins: "The New Atkins Made Easy: A Faster, Simpler Way to Shed Weight and Feel Great -- Starting Today!" (click for details).
To succeed in weight loss by adapting the low-carb, high fat "ketogenic" Atkins diet for a plant-based lifestyle, you'll need to be willing to focus on accentuating protein, said Colette. (Worth noting: The Atkins diet supports what an increasing number of physicians are saying: Carbohydrates such as white flour and sugar are the culprits when it comes to conditions ranging from obesity to Alzheimer's: Learn more by clicking here.)
The good news: Colette told us that many vegans and vegetarians succeed in shedding major amounts of weight. If you're on a plant-based diet, Colette suggests the following sources of protein:
- Different types of nuts
- Assorted seeds
- Nut and seed butters
- Controlled portions of legumes
For vegetarians, the menu expands to include:
- Plain yogurt
