Today, on June 17, 2014, Examiner.com had the opportunity to interview the founder of Botan, Edward Cannan, which he says is the “world’s first 100% soluble vegetable protein beverage.” A gluten-free, non-GMO Project Verified and vegan-certified product, it is available in three flavors – Strawberry Cucumber, Mini Tomato and Pineapple Coconut. We sampled the Strawberry Cucumber, which was delicious and refreshing.
What inspired you to found Botan?
As a result of a heavy sports injury, switching to a plant-based diet became an obligation in order to reverse a high uric acid situation due to a poor diet, which was a necessity to rebuild muscle. At the time, I realized how tough it was to find an easy-to-digest plant-based protein drink with a low calorie intake.
How did you become aware of and discover the concept of 100% soluble vegetable protein?
The necessity of a fast digestion is important to me as I need energy to perform throughout the day (whether it's for work or sports). Quick nutrient digestion meant higher performance - it was a no brainer to apply this concept to plant protein. Getting there was a challenging task, it took us about three years to get to where we are now.
How did you come up with the flavors?
The flavors are dependent on the flavor of natural ingredients. As we do not use any artificial flavoring or add any sugar, the task of having a great taste is often a challenge. We worked with hundreds of different fruits, perfumes and fruit extracts before we were able to come up with flavors that were unique, yet still familiar to the palette.
Do you have any celebrity fans of this drink?
Since we are still in the early stages (we officially launched in February 2014), we're currently working with a couple of celebrities who have become huge fans since its launch.
The product is available online and more than 300 locations throughout California, Hawaii and the Midwest including a major deal with Whole Foods.
