There are artists who have something, there are artists who just got it, and upon hearing his voice for the first time, it is obvious that singer/songwriter Siergio is one who has it. With an irresistible blend of soul, funk, R&B and pop, he invokes greats from the past while bringing something new to the game. He often times took to songwriting to document his several experiences of love, pain and life. Throughout the years of his adolescence, his voice developed and grew heights his family never expected. He began performing at local talent shows, school musicals, recording at local studios, and performing at weddings. He is humble, leveled, determined, passionate, talented and extraordinary. Check out my interview with him below:
Examiner (Anthony Bowles): What are your goals for 2013?
Siergio: “I have so many. (laughs) My ultimate goal is to touch as many people possible with my music. I have several projects being released. It’s going to be new music and more new music and I just want the right people to hear it."
Examiner (Anthony Bowles): How would you describe the music industry in 2013, and do you feel like you have found your way?
Siergio: “The music industry is definitely taking different directions. Hip Hop and Pop is really being praised right now. The state of r&b is just not how it use to be. It’s up to artist like myself to remind people of the good music that R&b has made. Every day I am finding my way and coming up with different ways to refresh this genre. I’m ushering in a new sound. I want to infuse hard, speaker slapping tracks with melodic sounds, romantic lyrics and soft arrangements. I call it grease & b. I think it’s very important for new artist to have a certain sound, something different from their cohorts."
Examiner (Anthony Bowles): Loved the single, “Looking for Love” but is the case in your reality, are you seeing anyone special at this time?
Siergio: “Thank you so much. It’s definitely the case for me right now. (smiles) When I make music I try to come from a very honest place. Right now I am so single. I’m so focused right now on trying to be all that I can be in music that I don’t have time to go out and date. I’m a good dude though. (laughs) I am just hoping that she finds me, sooner than later."
Examiner (Anthony Bowles): Who has been your musical influence?
Siergio: “R&B/Soul has always been my greatest influence. I grew up listening to Donny Hathaway, Anita Baker, Aretha Franklin and Sam Cooke. Monica, Tank and Brandy have also been some of my greatest influences. One thing I love about all of these artists are that they all had distinct sounds and tones. When you hear a Donny record, you know it’s a Donny record. I try to do my best to do that with my music."
Examiner (Anthony Bowles): What inspires you to write your own lyrics? How important is it to be a songwriter in this industry?
Siergio: “My life experiences are what inspire me to write. Just being honest and then putting it in a song. It really makes it easy to write when you were the one who actually went through it. Other times I just use my friend’s experiences (laughs). Their lives are so much more daring than mines. (laughs) As an artist in 2013, it’s very imperative to be a songwriter. No one can tell your story like you can. And plus the listeners want to know that they can connect with you on some level."
Examiner (Anthony Bowles): Are you excited to release your EP this year, “The Night Before & The Morning After”?
Siergio: “Yes. I am very excited. It feels to good to be releasing a body of work that I can truly say “this is Siergio.” I can’t wait to hear what people think of the sound I am giving as well. As an artist, when you take risks with your music its always interesting to see the response from fans. They have been so patient with me. I just wanted to make sure I gave them 100 with this project. They will have the slow jams, the hard hitting (grease) songs, the soulful records and also the more pop records."
Examiner (Anthony Bowles): What was one of your favorite songs from the EP and why?
Siergio: “They change every day (laughs). It’s so hard to choose. Today its “Nasty Nights”, I love the way that track hits you then smoothes right back out. Tomorrow it’ll probably be “Protest” (laughs). I definitely tap into a more soulful side on that song. Yesterday I was in love with “Break Up to Make Love. (laughs) It’s just too many to choose from. I’m going to be releasing that one soon though. The video shoot for that joint is right around the corner."
Examiner (Anthony Bowles): How is it performing live, and can your fans expect more live performances?
Siergio: “My fans can definitely expect more live performances. I have been rehearsing like crazy for the new year. I swear performing keeps me healthy and driven. There’s nothing like standing right before your fans and sharing so much of yourself. I can reach out and touch them. I can sing directly to them. It only brings me closer to the people who support me and also opens doors for me to garner new listeners. I love performing."
Examiner (Anthony Bowles): What would be your dream collaboration for 2013?
Siergio: “My dream collaboration for 2013 would be Big Sean. I really dig his energy and the elements he brings to records. He is like a lightning bolt. We would be crazy on a record together. I had the privilege to open up for him last year. It was one of the most defining moments of my career. His stage presence is crazy.”
Examiner (Anthony Bowles): What music is currently on your i-pod?
Siergio: “Right now I’m definitely bumping Two Eleven. Brandy really went in on that album. I’m also grooving to that new Rihanna album. The Mike Will track is stupid crazy. I really want to work with him. Elijah Blake mix tape is solid. I’m listening to India Shawn “Origin” album as well. She is a crazy talented vocalist and songwriter. (laughs) When I want to get a little ratchet I turn on Young Scooter. His music makes me go live. (laughs)”
Examiner (Anthony Bowles): Is there a recording label contract/deal in the works for you?
Siergio: “I will say that there are some labels looking at me. It is going to be really interesting to see how things pan out for me. Just keep supporting me everyone out there and it will happen sooner than later”
Examiner (Anthony Bowles): Lastly, what can your fans expect from you in 2013?
Siergio: “My fans can expect so much new music and definitely more acting. I have so many plans for these projects that will be coming out. Also there will be more covers from my “Shut up and Sing: Siergio” series on YouTube. I received a lot of love for my Rihanna “Stay” Cover. I am asking everyone out there to keep listening and rocking with me. I can’t do any of this without your undivided support. To the nation of Sierglsam: I love you. We had a great 2012, let’s make 2013 even better."
