Ring of Honor (ROH) returns to Metro Detroit this Friday, November 13 at the Rock Financial Showplace in Novi, Michigan. This show replaces the scheduled December 4 show at the Michigan State Fairgrounds . One of the most talented stars coming to town with ROH is the one and only Roderick Strong. I had the distinct pleasure to sit down with the former ROH World Tag Team Champion to get his thoughts on ROH' s TV deal with HDNet, ROH's visit to Detroit and much more.
Q. Roderick Strong, thank you so much for taking time to talk to me here on Examiner.com. You’ve been apart of ROH for quite some time. What can fans who haven’t had the chance to check out ROH expect November 13 versus what they see from TNA and WWE?
A.Thanks alot for having me. I think what the fans can expect from ROH is pure athletic contests that involve hard hitting, innovative action that just can't be found anywhere else!!
Q. Detroit is obviously a city that has been the setting for some the biggest pro wrestling evens of all time? Do you have any fond memories of wrestling in the Metro Detroit area?
A. A memory that will stick with me forever is wrestling KENTA for the first time in Detroit. That was a huge night in my career and it was one of the toughest fights of my life.
Q. Ring of Honor getting a TV deal with HDNet on Monday nights was obviously a huge step for a promotion who was already the third biggest wrestling company in the United States . What was your initial reaction when you found out ROH would have a weekly show on HDNet?
A. Excitement, Its a huge chance for us to show the world what many on the "underground" have known forever, the best action in the world comes from the guys in ROH!!
Q. Roderick, you were trained by former WWE World Tag Team Champion Jim “the Anvil” Neidhart in Florida . I read a story that you had no intentions of becoming a pro wrestler until you went to a training session with your father, who was being trained by Neidhart. Tell us what it was that made you want to become a pro wrestler?
A. I just loved it..... I can't really pick one thing that really made me decide that I wanted to be a pro wrestler. I love the athleticism, crowd interaction and being able to push yourself to a limit it has never been at before.
Q. During the war between WWE and WCW back in the late 1990’s, ECW suffered the most by losing a lot of talent to the two promotions. In recent years, we’ve seen a few ROH stars make the jump to WWE and TNA. What do you think ROH can do to avoid losing their home grown stars to WWE or TNA?
A. At the end of the day as much as all of us love this business we want to make as much money as possible. Change is going to happen in this business and I think the biggest thing that needs to happen is to have new stars to replace the guys that leave.
Q. On November 13 at the Rock Financial Showplace, you square off against Chris Hero with Shane Hagadorn in his corner. The two of you are no strangers to one another as you been in the ring together many times and tore the house down. What do you have in store for Hero here in Detroit ?
A. I have a few new tricks up my sleeve for Hero. He is really on a roll and is super dangerous
with all the elbow strikes he has, but come November 13th I will show Mr. Hero in the end only the strong survive!
Don't miss ROH live at the Rock Financial Showplace in Novi, MI this Friday, November 13 with an 8 P.M. belltime. Besides Strong battling Hero, here is the slated card:
ROH World Champion Austin Aires vs. Davey Richards with Shane Hagadorn in his corner
Tyler Black vs. Claudio Castagnoli
