Musician Steph Macpherson is a talented vocalist, pianist and guitarist who is living her dream. In the fall of 2009, she embarked on her first tour of Canada with fellow folk musician Zachary Lucky. After she finished the whirlwind tour – 30 shows in 33 days – she decided to enter into as many musical competitions she could find. It paid off in a big way because in 2010, she won a contest to perform at Lilith Fair 2010. She opened for many of her musical influences such as Sarah McLachlan, Colbie Caillat, Erykah Badu and Sheryl Crow. In a recent interview, Macpherson talked about her start in music, future plans, and much more.
Music has been a part of Macpherson’s life for as long as she can remember. “My parents started me in piano and voice lessons when I was five years old. I started playing the guitar in high school. It wasn’t until 2009 when I really started to pursue a career in music,” she said. Her hard work paid off and she has had some amazing experiences over the past three years. When she got the call about the Lilith Fair competition, it seemed almost too good to be true. In a short amount of time, she found herself performing on the same stage with music royalty. One of her most memorable moments to date was when Sarah McLachlan came up to her during the music festival and called her by name. Favorite musicians and musical influences include Fleetwood Mac, Ryan Adams, Joni Mitchell and Bob Dylan. The combination of her amazing talent, influences and experience, it has transformed her into the musician she has become today.
Macpherson has a passion for making music. When it comes to her songwriting, she said, “Sometimes it’s a mystery to me. Sometimes I sit down and it just pours out. I write about my life and the lives of the people around me. I’ve always been a really reflective person.”
This talented young lady has so much to offer in the future with her music. She’s already on her way and has many things in store for music fans including a new album and a tour.
