Sunday December 6th, 2009 - Marc Dos Santos who just signed a two-year contract to be the head coach of the Montreal Impact took some time with the Montreal Soccer Examiner this week for a quick interview.
Marc, who was born in Canada, started playing soccer at a very young age in Brossard. Marc had established himself as a defender after idolizing the legendary Paolo Maldini. At the age of ten his family decided to move back to Portugal where he spent the next 12 years of his life. He played for several teams including a team in the Portuguese 3rd division where he enjoyed great success as a right back. At 22, Marc decided to move back to Canada where he continued to play soccer in several recreational leagues in Montreal.
Marc always had a great passion for the sport of soccer but it was his high school in Portugal who saw more than passion behind his eyes. It was at the age of 16 that Marc Dos Santos was given the huge responsibility of coaching his high school team in one of the biggest tournaments of the year. After the gym teacher was forced to take some time off due to an illness, the high school decided to put their trust in Marc’s hands. It was at that moment Marc got his first taste of coaching which consequently became his career of choice. At 22 years of age Marc made one of the biggest decisions in his life. He realized that he wanted to be a part of soccer but at a very high level. He knew that as a player he would probably not be able to attain the highest level and decided to concentrate on managing a team rather than playing. As a coach his mentor was a professor in Portugal by the name of Professor Frade. Teaching the likes of Jose Mourinho, Professor Frade specializes in sports science and coaching methodology. Dos Santos looked to Frade to help him get to the next level of coaching. Dos Santos also looks up to Arsene Wenger of Arsenal because of his ability to observe and discover talent at a very young age.
Marc was quick to state that his greatest accomplishment in life is his family. Always putting family first, Dos Santos believes that having a great wife and family has helped him become successful in soccer. He also went on to state that his greatest accomplishment on the field was definitely this years’ USL Championship with the Montreal Impact. Having a great bunch of players all with great characters Marc said that it was thanks to their perseverance and will to win which helped them accomplish this amazing feat.
Short and Long Term Plans
After signing a two-year extension with the Impact Marc’s short term goal is to try and bring another championship to Montreal. The legacy he wants to leave behind is to become the first ever coach to lead a team to back-to-back USL championships. His goal is also to go down as the most successful coach in Impact history. In the long term he wishes to take his coaching to a higher level and one day he aspires to be coaching at the highest level in World Soccer.
He finished off by saying that he wanted to thank the Montreal Impact for giving him the opportunity of a lifetime and he also wanted to thank all his players for showing so much character in this years’ championship run.
