Jason Newsted has entered new territory with his metal power trio, Newsted, and for the first time ever, he’s fronting his own band. For over thirty years, he’s been an integral part of the metal and rock world with his time in Metallica, Flotsam and Jetsam, Voivid and Ozzy Osbourne's touring band. In a recent interview, he talked about the new band and much more.
Newsted had to take some time off beginning in December 2004 when he had his first major shoulder surgery. In late 2011, Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich talked him into performing at one of the band's 30th anniversary shows in San Francisco. “I was excited to be on stage again...I didn't expect it...the fans were screaming, and I realized how much they missed me, and I them,” he remembers.
Newsted is proud of his new band, and describes the music as “genuine, old school metal.” The band includes Newsted, guitarist Jesse Farnsworth, and drummer Jesus Mendez Jr. “I could’ve pulled superstars together, but it wouldn’t be the same belief,” he said, “These guys support me...we vibe like brothers.”
Taking on the role of front man isn’t something Newsted is accustomed to. “It was hard in a way. I’ve worked on developing my voice...it’s very difficult. It’s quite a challenge, but I’m really enjoying the challenge.”
When it came to songwriting, the band had a great chemistry. “The music was written on my iPad, and then I presented it to the other players. They put their artistry to it, and I’m always open to their ideas,” Newsted said.
Newsted is grateful for his experiences. “I’ve lived a few dreams,” he said. While in Metallica, one of his most memorable moments was performing at the Tushino Airfield in Moscow. While in Voivoid, “I learned so much...I learned to adapt with the language barriers and communicated with music,” he said.
Newsted had a great response to their EP released earlier this year. The band recently released their long awaited debut, full–length album, Heavy Metal Music, and it's receiving rave reviews from both fans and critics alike. For more information: www.newstedheavymetal.com.
