2014 is an election year in Nevada, and Examiner.com is sitting down with some of the candidates for key races so that the voters will be able to make informed decisions. The next in this series is a phone interview with congressional candidate Russell Best, the Independent American Party nominee for Nevada’s Fourth District

Best was born in Texas to an Australian immigrant and a Texas native. After graduating high school he joined the Naval Reserve and became an active member of the United States Navy. He left the military with an honorable discharge for medical reasons and afterwards graduated college from Moorpark College. He went on to work for Gulf Oil, Taco Bell Corporate and Meritor Mortgage. He was an unpaid lobbyist for banking laws and real estate. He currently owns an independent mortgage company in northern Nevada.

We spoke with Best in a phone interview regarding his run for United States Congress.

Why are you running for office?

With all the problems with democrats and republicans they each vote for their own side. Neither one is trying to save the United States. They are working for their own agendas. I am a disabled vet working to keep our veterans’ rights and freedoms that keep getting taken away from us.

What are your qualifications?

I’ve been in real estate, management, the banking industry, the mortgage industry, I was in the Navy. I have a lot of different variety of experience that I can back myself up on.

Third party candidates have a reputation for being spoilers for the two major parties. Do you agree with this assessment?

No, I don’t. I believe our party has been growing out here in Nevada. People are growing tired of the status quo.

Why do you think that you have a better chance than past third party candidates?

The only reason is basic; I’m a constitutionalist. I believe in the Constitution. I believe that by being a disabled veteran I understand the veterans feelings on some of these items, like Medicare and the VA. I know what’s going on and I can help fix it.

What is your stance on same-sex marriage?

Marriage should be between a man and a woman. I think this has already been beat to death. I believe it’s a states’ rights issue, each state should be able to adopt its own rules and preferences.

What is your opinion on oil fracking?

I believe it’s a positive way to get away from buying foreign oil and making us more independent. If we were to allow it and it should also reduce our taxes.

Do you support an increase in alternative forms of energy, including green energy such as solar and wind?

I believe all of it will help us, not just one particular thing. I believe oil fracking is something we need right now because we pay so much for oil. The rest should come as products are developed by companies and we can use it.

Do you support the legalization of marijuana?

I think that’s another states’ rights issue. We should stay out of states’ rights issues.

What is your opinion on gun rights?

I’m totally against gun control and for the Second Amendment. I believe we’ve gone too far. What they need to do is read the Second Amendment and use that as their guide.

What action, if any, will you take with regards to the Affordable Care Act?

Personally I would try to repeal it. But if that’s not going to work I have a way to fix it. The first way is to put a flat tax and balance the budget. This will stop runaway spending from both parties. I would stop AMA from controlling how many doctors we can have, which will decrease the higher prices we have all been stuck with. All doctors must take care of all people. They must take 50 percent of patients from Medicare and Medicaid. Fourth, we have many people who come to medical school in America then go back home when they graduate. People in America should get the first shot at the trained doctors. I would make the foreigners stay for five years. I would stop the eugenics under Obamacare, stop the runaway costs. I would charge 10 percent of wages to Social Security for everyone that works. Those that don’t have insurance are on Medicare and Medicaid. Next, I would allow insurance companies to go back to original policies. People will have supplemental insurance, the churches will have to keep their exempt status. All other nonprofits will pay on income earned the first of the year. All corporate dividends will be divestible expenditures to have a taxable re investment. This will make our corporations competitive worldwide.

Do you support school choice in the form of vouchers?

I believe that we should have the right to go to school, and vouchers are okay if they want to use it. It’s a states’ rights issue. As long as the federal government doesn’t have to pay for it I don’t have a problem with it. I believe we need to get rid of the Department of Education and give that money back to the school districts and states.

Do you support an increase in the minimum wage?

No I don’t. All that’s going to do is cause 500,000 jobs to cease to exist. Right now we have a problem with unemployment. Right now it’s at 18 percent, not 8 percent like they say. That’s part of the problem. This black guy that got shot in Missouri the other day, and then people go breaking into stores and stealing what they can. They wouldn’t be doing that if they had jobs. The government can not create jobs per say, temporary ones but that’s about it. Private industry creates jobs.

How would you handle the current immigration crisis?

Here’s the problem with immigration right now; I believe we need to close the border before we do anything else. Secure the border, and get work permits for those who are here and will work to take the first step toward citizenship. Immigrants need to go on our lists, go in line like anybody else. They don’t just come in and take over. I believe that they need to have English in five years before becoming citizens. If they follow all of the steps to becoming a citizen, swear allegiance to this country. We levy a fine, $10,000 and 30 days in jail, for hiring workers if they don’t have visas. I believe this will stop hiring of illegal aliens. We send all aliens that are criminals back to their country and charge that country for the cost. We take action to stop them from taking advantage of social services. We can take only illegals in emergencies in hospitals, all long term cases go back to the country of origin. They should not receive social security if they are not entitled to it. No schooling, it costs money the schools don’t have. No Medicare or Medicaid, it costs money we don’t have. If we follow our immigration laws like every other country. We have laws, nobody’s following them or listening. We don’t just let anybody in, we’re letting the wrong people in. When we have unemployment as high as it is we need to cut immigration and secure jobs for our people. Once America gets back on it’s feet we can bring in as many aliens as we need. The 60,000 kids we’re bringing in, our government has been advertising on Central American TV what to say to stay here. I feel sorry for the kids, but they need to go home and come back the right way, bring their parents with them. Kids without parents is not a good thing anyway.

Do you have anything else you’d like to add?

I’m going to give you my 10 steps:

1. No more bailouts

2. Reduce the size and intrusiveness of government

3. Stop raising our taxes

4. Repeal Obamacare

5. Stop the immigration bill

6. Stop Agenda 21 AKA Sustainable Development. If you don’t know what this is look it up. It’s part of the one world order.

7. Cease out of control spending

10. Stop the NDAA
