Examiner.com had the opportunity to interview Young Money hip-hop recording artist, songwriter, television personality (MTV’s "Ridiculousness" and "Fantasy Factory") and actress Chanel West Coast who released her debut mixtape "Now You Know" on the red carpet for the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards at the Barclay Center. The mixtape features French Montana, Snoop Dogg, Robin Thicke, Evan Ross, Ty Dolla $ign and Honey Cocaine and her single “Karl” is out now.
Q: How were you able to get all of these cool collaborations on your project?
Chanel West Coast: I'm friends with a lot of cool people. That's kind of how it happened. I just hit up a lot of my good friends who are in the music industry and I was like, 'Look, you got to be on this mix tape, it's going to be poppin.' I hassled my friends until I got those features.
Q: Can you tell me about joining the Young Money Family?
Chanel West Coast: Wayne actually wanted to sign me so I'm on the Young Money side. And it's amazing. I think it's the greatest stamp of approval. Obviously YMCMB is... they're team winning so...it's great. I love it.
Q: Are you excited to be here at the VMA's?
Chanel West Coast: I'm very excited. I've been coming to the VMA's for the past couple of years but this is my first time as a signed recording artist so it's like that much better.
Q: Can you tell me about where your passion for hip hop comes from and how you got started?
Chanel West Coast: Really, my dad is a DJ from here in Brooklyn so I think I get the music love from him. And I started listening to Tupac when I was like 10 and Tupac really inspired me to start rapping and so that's how it happened.
