87% of women in Afghanistan can't read.
Maternal deaths in Afghanistan are the second highest in the world, with one woman dying every 30 minutes.
Approximately 40,000 deaf reside in Afghanistan, and 10,000 of them are children.
While issues like these can seem so monumental and impossible to tackle, one local woman has begun a remarkable journey in helping one woman at a time, one day at a time. Shannon Galpin, founder and director of Mountain 2 Mountain, has risked her life to help Afghan women live their lives with an education, power and rights. Founded in 2006, her nonprofit is dedicated to creating programs to empower and encourage women and children in the rural villages in Afghanistan. Read more about her mission.
On April 22, Galpin will be an honorary speaker at "The Streets of Afghanistan," a fundraiser and launch party for her upcoming national multi-media exhibit revealing what really happens to women in Afghanistan. It's rare that Americans see what's happening on the other side of the "War on Terror." Galpin's photography and videos reveal the reality of the situation, and, well, what CNN isn't showing us.
It's a heavy topic, yes, but there's no better way to help a global cause than to spend an evening with notable, local ladies. Hosted by former model Corinne Domahidy, law student Emma Keyser and Denver Magazine's Auna Jornayvaz, this event also makes for a great networking opportunity. From some of Colorado's most successful women -- Merril Lynch's Marti Awad, NBC's Denise Plante, Phaseline Strategies' Monica Owens and KYGO's Kelly Ford -- to designers, accountants and Internet gurus, this event welcomes women of various ages, interests and professions.
And if that's not enough, there will be wine, appetizers and shopping. Afghan photography, fashion and jewelry will be available for purchase.
