On May 20, 2014, Examiner.com was on the red carpet for the New York premiere of director Kelly Reichardt's "Night Moves," which follows three passionate environmentalists whose homegrown plot to blow up a controversial dam unravels into a journey of doubt, paranoia and unintended consequences. The film's stars Dakota Fanning and Peter Sarsgaard were in attendance.
Notable guests included Ebon Moss-Bachrach and Alex Karpovsky, Vampire Weekend’s Chris Tomson, Parker Posey, Jeremy Strong, Jeffrey Costello and Robert Tagliapietra, Maya Kazan, Melonie Diaz, Alison Wright, Kate Lyn Sheil, filmmakers Ryan Fleck, Anna Boden, Alistair Banks Griffin, Zach Wigon, Heidi Ewing, Rachel Grady, Amir Bar-Lev, Mary Harron and Todd Solondz, Leah Hennessey, Teresa Moore, Jordan Murray, Will Janowitz, Keith Poulson, and Todd and Megan DiCiurcio.
The premiere was hosted by Forevermark jewelry. So Dakota wore a Forevermark Clamshell Ring with round brilliant Forevermark Diamonds set in 18 karat yellow gold. She looked fabulous in a red Roland Mouret jumpsuit.
Read what Dakota told us exclusively about playing Dena in the film:
Tell me a little bit about your character in the film.
Dakota: I play Dena in the film and she is one of the three people that get together to commit environmental activism. She was a very fun character to play, she starts out as very talkative, and she talks a mile a minute and that was fun to do.
What did you love about the script. Kelly also co-wrote it.
Dakota: I love that the script was so simple, the story is really simple and it's about these three people and these characters and I knew she would put her style on it and I was so thrilled to be part of it.
Were there any challenges for you?
Dakota: I think doing the scenes on the boat were challenging for everyone just because Peter was really driving the boat and it was freezing in the middle of the night. Just the elements, but it was also really fun and also exhilarating doing it, too.
Talk about working with Peter and Jesse?
Dakota: It was so great. I knew Peter a little bit before making this movie and I didn't know Jesse at all, but we were in an environment where we were all very close and working together all the time and staying at the same place, so we were together a lot and really bonded and really got along, which was nice.
Peter Sarsgaard plays Harmon. Read our exclusive interview below:
What attracted you to working on this film?
Working with Kelly Reichardt.
Tell me about collaborating with her.
Peter: She really makes it feel like you totally own everything you're doing. It's like you show up and you do it. That's the way it is with Kelly, we had a couple of words about it before, but I think I'd always known she'd work like that, my wife had told me I should writer her a letter years ago to ask to be in one of her films, because I always wanted to work with her and I didn't, but when this came, I really knew that I would know what I was doing on this kind of movie.
Tell me about your character, who is he?
Peter: He's an ex-Marine, I think he's sort of someone living on the edge of society and somewhat happily.
Tell me about being immersed in nature.
Peter: Well it's Oregon, I mean nature is one of the big... almost like a character, a thing that they saved, our lady in distress.
Speak about working with Dakota Fanning and Jesse.
Peter: They're both fantastic. I'd known Dakota before we started and we had a really easy relationship. When we were filming, I didn't live with either one of them, I lived in a different city altogether because I wanted to be close to running. We really knew each other just at work, which is really unusual when you're on location because actors usually hang out after work. They may have been socializing, but I wasn't socializing with them very much. It just made it so that I'd show up and I'd look over at Jesse and be like "That's the anxious guy, I have to settle him down so he doesn't blow this entire thing," and I'd look at her and I would just think "What a beautiful, pure creature."
After the red carpet, but before the after-party Dakota Fanning and Peter Sarsgaard enjoyed a night out at Beauty & Essex. Two other friends joined the co-stars. The ladies shared Oysters, Tuna Poke Tacos, Kale & Apple Salad, Avocado Toast, Oven Braised Chicken Meatballs, Broccolini, and Lobster Mac & Cheese. But the vegan actor ordered his own dishes – A vegan pasta, a tofu version of Beauty & Essex's flash seared Tuna, and sorbet for dessert.
Following the screening, everyone headed over to Hotel Chantelle where the venue was finally able to open the rooftop! Guests snacked on grilled chicken, hamburger sliders, shrimp and macaroni balls. It was perfect weather and guests enjoyed Qui Tequila cocktails. The Cinedigm film is 112 minutes and hits theaters May 30, 2014.
