Many of today’s stars were in fact late bloomers in their own right, such as in the literal sense, as well as on an achievable level, too. Some of today’s celebrities all didn’t see success glaring them in the eyes until their later years, and from this, there’s certainly a message ringing loud and clear: never give up on your hopes and dreams. That’s what burgeoning emcee K. Mekonen did, as he endured mounts of tragic events in his life, only to overcome those past struggles and come out on top.
After undergoing a painful a knee injury that put his hoop dreams to rest, and sustaining a little glimpse of hope following the emotional death of his father, Mekonen, who is of Jamaican/American decent, hit the studio and honed his songwriting craft aligning himself with the likes of: Jazze Pha, The Outsiders, and DJ Webstar, just to name a few. Now, poised to make a mark for himself, the 27 year old Bronx native has unleashed his first debut project “Late Bloomers” on the mixtape outlet DatPiff, and in less than two days, has already surpassed the 2,000 view mark, which is incredible for any artist these days, especially a newcomer like him. Jam-packed with 17 songs (plus two bonuses), the rapper enlists the help of his in-house producers, Maeja and Korda, from At Tha Top Productions. Joining in on the hard-hitting set is 18-year old Trav Is Music and Mowix Musiqk, who both serve up a few heaters of their own. As if that isn’t enough, Mekonen has two singles out digitally that may quench your musical thirst for the time being ("100 Grand" and "Billie-Jean (Light Steps)," which can be listened to here or here.
