Exclusive: advance review of 'Psych' premiere, 'You Can't Handle This Episode'

"Psych" comes back to TV Wednesday night, and it is just as funny as it was last summer. Many of your favorite gags are back, from the random nicknames to the digs at "The Mentalist" to even Corbin Bernsen's bad flashback hair. Then, you have the actual episode.

"You Can't Handle This Episode," like many installments of the series, revolved around a theme. This time, it was the military. After a dead soldier turns up, Juliet enlists the help of her brother, a military operative with a storied past (played by WWE superstar John Cena). The investigation then takes its share of twists and turns, leading to Shawn and Gus showing up at a military base and trying to deal with an over-the-top military general (Robert Patrick).

Without giving into the finer details, the episode also involves the two women in Shawn's life: girlfriend Abigail (Rachel Leigh Cook) and of course Juliet. He stirs up a bit of trouble with both of them along the way, and things take a dramatic turn thanks to a surprising revelation.

Cena has gotten most of the publicity for the episode, and for the most part he played up the campy role well. There was maybe a little too much cross-promotion for the WWE, but I don't blame USA for trying to hype up their properties. The real scene-stealing guest star here is Patrick. Is this his finest work since the T-1000? Okay I'm being a little over-the-top, but his redundant allusions to American history were worth a laugh every time.

By the end of the episode, we ended up having one of the more surprising conclusions to a "Psych" episode that I've seen. Hats off to USA for keeping this show funny and fresh through three and a half seasons, as this episode ultimately only makes me more excited for the next one. Usually this is the point where shows start to show their age, but Shawn Spencer and company seem to be only improving. They are branching out beyond the typical mystery show, and it's paying off.
