Exciting move for saltwater anglers red drum designated sport game fish

Coastal Conservation Association of Georgia through a bill introduced to lawmakers, is seeking to move red drum also known as channel bass, redfish, redbass or reds saltwater species into sport game fish status and licking out commercial fishing. Representative Dr. Ben Watson through bill HB-26 is seeking to stop commercial harvest making red drum the first fish to receive such attention. South Carolina and Florida have already designated red drum a game fish in federal waters.

Sport game fish can only be harvested by rod and reel

Game fish status means it can’t be sold by law. Daily catch (5 fish 14”-23”) and release requirements would stay the same. CCA is the largest marine conservation group with 17 state chapters and 100,000 members, and is looking to boost Georgia’s economy by developing coastal fishery tourism.
