On Friday Nov. 8, 2013 Universal Pictures announced that film director Justin Lin (Fast & Furious 6) will direct the 5th installment of the “Jason Bourne” series. Justin will co-produce along with Ben Smith, Frank Marshal & Jeffrey Weiner. On Monday Dec. 2, 2013 Universal followed up with the announcement that the next installment will get a theatrical release date of August 14, 2015. It will star Jeremy Renner as Aaron Cross who was in the 4th installment called, “The Bourne Legacy” back in 2012.
The “Jason Bourne” movie franchise is adapted from the novels written by Robert Ludlum. The 1988 made for TV movie was titled, “The Bourne Indentity.” It starred Richard Chamberlain as Jason Bourne & Jaclyn Smith as Marie St. Jacques. There was no TV sequel. It was released on DVD & fans have uploaded the full movie onto “YouTube.” It is being compared to the later films starring Matt Damon as Bourne. Fans say that the TV version follows the novel a lot closer. It is however receiving harsh reviews from recent movie fans.
Just how popular is Jason Bourne? According to “Box Office Mojo” which tracks movie grosses. The first installment called, “The Bourne Indentity” (2002) with Matt Damon grabbed a U.S. Domestic total of $121,661,683. / The Foreign total racked up $92,372,541. / The Worldwide total stands at 214, 034,224.
The second installment called, “The Bourne Supremacy” (2004) which also starred Matt Damon. The U.S. Domestic total grabbed $176,241,941. / The Foreign total racked up $112,258,276. / The Worldwide total stands at $288,500,217.
The third installment called, “The Bourne Ultimatum” (2007) again had Matt Damon in the lead role. The U.S. Domestic total grabbed $227,471,070. / The Foreign total racked up $215,353,068. / The Worldwide total stands at $442, 824, 138.
Fans of the franchise had hoped for another sequel, but Matt Damon opted out of the next installment because of story problems. He also wouldn't come back if film director, Paul Greengrass didn't return. Universal Pictures moved on with Tony Gilroy directing, “The Bourne Legacy” with a new CIA operative named Aaron Cross (Jeremy Renner).
The fourth installment called “The Bourne Legacy” (2012) starred Jeremy Renner & Rachel Weisz. The popularity of the franchise did not wane a bit. The U.S. Domestic total grabbed $113,203,870. / The Foreign total racked up $162,940,880. / The Worldwide total stands at $276,144,750.
The fifth “Jason Bourne” installment has not been titled as of this date. Justin Lin directed, “The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift” (2006), “Fast & Furious” (2009), “Fast Five” (2011) & “Fast & Furious 6” (2013). Those movies are a part of the Universal Pictures family & with any indication of the popularity of the action films. Justin might bring “Jason Bourne” to a whole new level.
