The Angels got a welcome surprise when Josh Hamilton reported early to Spring Training, however, the good mood was spoiled in a hurry.
Ryan Madson, speaking to the media on Monday, revealed that he experienced soreness while throwing on Feb. 2 and has stopped throwing in his recovery from Tommy John surgery.
"I've been feeling pretty good until the last little bit," Madson said. "I don't know if I amped it up too much getting excited and it wasn't ready. I don't know."
Madson signed an one-year, incentive-laden deal during the winter and was expected to be the Halos' closer this season.
However, the shutdown presents the possibility that Madson could begin the season on the disabled list and leave the Angels looking to Ernesto Frieri until the Moreno Valley native is ready.
Meanwhile, Hamilton got accustomed to his new digs about 30-45 minutes from his old ones. The veteran outfielder is expected to play right field this season for the Angels with 2013 AL Rookie of the Year Mike Trout in left and speedster Peter Bourjos in center.
