Excessive Heat Warning issued for LA area

Due to a potentially-deadly heatwave that's expected to hit the LA region this weekend, forecasters are encouraging many residents to spend time indoors.

Those venturing into Antelope Valley in northern Los Angeles County will be socked by daytime high temperatures that could soar as high as 115 degrees, with the mercury in Santa Clarita Valley's thermometer expected to rise above the century mark, predict meteorologists.

If locals and visitors must go outside during the hottest part of the day, officials advise them to wear loose-fitting clothing, limit rigorous outdoor activities and remain hydrated by drinking lots of fresh water.

“Exceedingly high temperatures can cause heat-related illness or death,” a National Weather Service advisory stated. “Those working or playing outdoors, and those without air conditioning are most vulnerable.”

Authorities also advise those living in the L.A. region to pay close attention to the needs of children, seniors and pets by not leaving them inside a parked vehicle for any length of time.

To find out how to locate one of Los Angeles County's 89 cooling centers, phone 211 from your landline or mobile unit.
