Examining the spiritual forces empowering lawlessness in our world

2 Thessalonians 2:7 (NASB) declares that ”the mystery of lawlessness is already at work.” 1 John 3:4 defines lawlessness as the practice of sin-which is the breaking of God’s laws.

Such rebellious breaking of God’s laws was first seen shortly after God created mankind as described in Genesis 2-3. The first woman, named Eve, was deceived by the Devil into breaking God’s command of not eating the fruit from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil in the Garden of Eden. Then the first man, named Adam, chose to follow his wife into disobeying God’s command.

Their disobedience had disastrous results in many ways. First, they lost their special relationship with God and fell from being in a perfect and innocent state into a corrupt and sinful state that had a tendency to rebel against God’s laws and principles for living. Second, they lost the special light that had covered them and they soon discovered that they needed clothes to cover their nakedness. Third, they passed all of the above problems to their children and their ancestors of every generation throughout the ages of time.

The majority of those ancestors chose to rebel against God’s principles for living in their ungodly lifestyle, along with following the demonic deceptions that got the first people in trouble. Such a rebellious lifestyle continued to get so bad that in the time of Noah “the LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great on the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.” (Genesis 6:5)

As a result of seeing that, God initially wanted to destroy every man. (Genesis 6:7) However, when God saw one righteous family living according to God’s principles for living, then God decided to start over using that one righteous family. God told Noah to build a very large boat so that his family and the animals could escape the coming flood which would destroy every person who was breaking God’s laws. (Genesis 6; 13-21)

After the terrible flood was over, God started over using Noah’s family and may have thinking that this time things would go better than before. But, after only a few generations the same terrible situation occurred again as the majority of the people chose to rebel against God’s principles to pursue an ungodly lifestyle, while a small minority of people chose to live according to God’s principles. People continued living in those patterns of behavior for many hundreds of years and then they were written about by the Apostle Paul in Romans 1:17-32.

As part of His prophecies about the events and conditions that will happen on earth before His return to earth, Jesus prophesied about the effect of mankind’s rebellious behavior and great lawlessness by declaring that “because lawlessness is increased, most people’s love will grow cold.” (Matthew 24:12)

The Apostle Paul also prophesied about the increase of such rebellious behavior in 2 Timothy 3:1-5. Then, in 2 Thessalonians 2:3-10, Paul prophesied about the coming of the man of lawlessness who would get his spiritual power from the Devil so he could produce some great signs and false wonders that would deceive those people who would not receive God’s truths and become saved.

This lawless man will extend his rebellion against God so far that “he exalts himself above every so-called god or object of worship, so that he takes his seat in the temple of God, displaying himself as being God.” (2 Thessalonians 2:4)

Although that man of lawlessness hasn’t been publicly revealed yet, nor has the Jewish Temple of God been rebuilt in Jerusalem; the same demonic spirit of lawlessness that will empower his actions when he is revealed is now very active throughout the world as seen in various news stories in the world’s news media.

I have seen many news stories about people committing great actions of lawlessness and doing many other things that try to destroy any trace of God’s principles that are a part of Western Civilization, possibly so that they could replace that with ‘a new world order.’

I have also seen many news stories about influential leaders and organizations who are working hard to create a one world government that excludes any mention of God or His principles.

Even though there is a world government prophesied in Revelation 13, (which could a long time in the future), instead of passively accepting that as an accomplished fact, Christians can fight the establishment of such a system in their area by many ways. First, this can be done by having good Christian leaders in their government agencies that will resist switching to the values of the new world order. Second, that can also be done through Christians carefully watching for any demonic deceptions or spiritual forces of lawlessness that might try to take hold in their area.

When Christians see the spiritual forces of the Devil and lawlessness come into their area, they can use the spiritual gift of distinguishing of spirits to discern what those evil spirits are. Then, they can get together with other Christians and through using the name of Jesus Christ to bind the attacking spiritual forces of the Devil and through using the power of the Holy Spirit they can cast those demonic forces into the abyss/lake of fire forever.

As Christians continue to use the power of the Holy Spirit to live according to God’s principles for living found in the Bible and use their spiritual weapons described in Ephesians 6:10-18 to conquer the attacking demonic forces; then Christians can be a brightly shining beacon of God’s kingdom in the midst of our modern world that is filled with many kinds of spiritual, moral, and intellectual darkness!
