Examining God's promises to Israel and some Bible prophecies about their battles

As I have been watching the television news reports about how Israel is being attacked by rockets from its Arab/Muslim neighbors and is having to defend itself from those attacks; I have been thinking of the many promises and covenants that the nation of Israel and the Jewish people have been given by God, along with thinking about some prophecies about some of the battles that Israel will be involved in.

In Genesis 12:2-3 (NASB) God gave the Jewish Patriarch Abraham the promise that “I will make you a great nation and I will bless you . . . And I will bless those who bless you, and the one who curses you I will curse.”

Then in Genesis 17:7-8, God promised Abraham that: “I will establish My covenant between Me and you and your descendants after you throughout your generations for an everlasting covenant to be God to you and to your descendants after you. And I will give to you and to your descendants after you the land of your sojournings, all the land of Canaan [Israel], for an everlasting possession and I will be their God.”

God further gave Israel a special promise found in Jeremiah 31:35-36: “Thus says the LORD, Who gives the sun for light by day, and the fixed order of the moon and the stars for light by night, Who stirs up the sea so that its waves roar; the LORD of hosts is His name. If this fixed order departs from Me declares the LORD, then shall the offspring of Israel shall also cease from being a nation forever.”

Since Almighty God through His great power created the heavens, the sun, the moon, the stars, and the earth and then He keeps them in their fixed order; then God can give His people the land of Canaan/Israel for an everlasting possession as well as keeping Israel as a nation as long as He keeps the fixed order of the sun, moon, and stars.

God has also given the people of Israel some precious prophecies about fighting for them in their battles as described in Zechariah 12;2-3, 8-9: “Behold, I am going to make Jerusalem a cup that causes reeling to all peoples around; and when the siege is against Jerusalem, it will also be against Judah. And it will come about in that day that I will make Jerusalem a heavy stone for all the peoples; all who lift it will be severely injured. And all the nations of the earth will be gathered against it. . . . And in that day the LORD will defend the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and the one who is feeble among them in that day will be like David, and the house of David will be like God, like the angel of the LORD before them. And it will come about in that day that I will set about to destroy all the nations that come against Jerusalem.”

“Now this will be the plague with which the LORD will strike all peoples who have gone to war against Jerusalem; their flesh shall rot while they stand on their feet, and their eyes will rot in their sockets, and their tongue will rot in their mouth . . . Then it will come about that any who are left of all the nations that went against Jerusalem will go up from year to year to worship the King, the LORD of hosts, and to celebrate the Feast of Booths [Tabernacles] and it will be that whatever of the families of the earth does not go up to Jerusalem to worship the King, the LORD of hosts, there will be no rain on them.” (Zechariah 14:4-5, 12, 16-17)

As God’s people consider these promises and prophecies about God fighting Israel’s enemies and then hear news reports about Israel being attacked again; then God’s people should follow God’s command found in Psalm 122:6 to “Pray for the peace of Jerusalem” and then they will get God’s blessing of ”May they prosper who love you.”
