Recently I have felt the weather in the Columbia area become cooler and I have seen how this has made the leaves of some trees turn beautiful colors. I have also seen that the sun is going down over the horizon much earlier-which means that there are more hours of darkness and cooler nights. These things tell me that the autumn season is here and that the season of winter will be here in a couple of months.
As I think of the changing of seasons and the cooling of the physical climate, I also think of the enormous change in the spiritual, moral, intellectual, and political climates of this country away from the way those climates were when our country was founded.
One of our nation’s founding fathers, John Adams declared that the founding fathers achieved Independence on ”the general principles of Christianity.” As the result of using the Scriptures to guide them in their personal and political lives, our founders knew that as they followed what God they could bring forth a great nation.
Because of their godly faith, they boldly declared in the Declaration of Independence that: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.”
Notice that our founders said that we were given some unalienable rights from God—which meant that since God gave them to us, then only God could take them away from us!
However, in sharp contrast to those great godly principles, in the last century some progressive-minded politicians seemed to have been seduced by evil spirits into thinking that by replacing the God-given rights that our founding documents gave us with the socialistic concept that people only had the rights that government would give them; that some how this would make us a better country.
As those progressive politicians shifted the political climate from being based on godly principles found in the Bible to secular, socialistic, and worldly principles; some people and politicians seemed to have lost their moral compass. As a result of that, ungodly, corrupt, and scandalous actions become the normal behavior for some people and politicians.
The shift from godly values to worldly values has also been seen in the entertainment and advertising industries. Now, instead of producing their movies, television programs, music, books, etc. based on godly and family friendly values; those industries produce the above things full of ungodly behavior, criminal violence, and demonic deceptions.
The many forms of ungodly, rebellious, and lawless behavior in the above situations reminds me of the statement of the Apostle Paul that “the mystery of lawlessness is already at work.” (2 Thessalonians 2:7 NASB)
Paul further states that a man will arise and use the power of the Devil to produce great signs and wonders so that he can deceive those people who will not accept God’s truths and become saved. (2 Thessalonians 2:3-10)
The deceptive spirit of lawlessness seems to have spread over some parts of our country in the same way that a dense autumn fog spreads over some areas making it hard for people to see where they are going.
Such a deceptive fog has also spread over some people’s morality as prophesied by Paul in 2 Timothy:1-3: “But realize this, that in the last days difficult times will come. For men will be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, revilers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy, unloving, irreconcilable, malicious gossips, without self-control, brutal, haters of good.”
This demonically-assisted fog has also deceived people into becoming “lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God.” (2 Timothy 3:4)
In 2 Timothy 4:3-4 Paul prophesies about the effect of this deceptive fog on some religious people when he wrote that: ”For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate to themselves teachers in accordance to their own desires; and will turn away their ears from the truth, and will turn side to myths.”
In contrast to all the problems that the demonically aided fog causes people, those people who have accepted Jesus Christ as their personal Savior can use the bright lights of God’s principles for living found in the Bible along with the insight and power of the Holy Spirit to shine through the fog of demonic deceptions just like bright car and truck lights shine through a dense fog to show their driver the oncoming traffic, traffic lanes, and the road ahead to help them stay on the right path to where they are going.
As Christians go through their daily activities they need to use the insight and power of the Holy Spirit to warn them about deceptions from the spiritual forces of darkness that would divert their attention from following God’s principles of living.
When Christians receive that warning, they need to use their spiritual weapons described in Ephesians 6:10-18, the name of Jesus Christ, and the power of the Holy Spirit to bind the attacking spiritual forces of darkness and cast them into the abyss/lake of fire forever.
Christians also need to have their spiritual power renewed every day by reading God’s Word, talking to God in prayer, and having their mind renewed by the power of the Holy Spirit. As Christians do these things they will be able to overcome the many kinds of problems that they will face during the rest of their journey of life.
