Examiner travels: Bennington Battle Monument, Vermont

The Buffalo Travel Examiner spent part of this week touring a few places in Vermont, including the Vermont Teddy Bear Factory, the Vermont Wildflower Farm, the Hemmings Car Lovers’ Store and Vehicle Display, and the Bennington Battle Monument. Here’s a quick look at the Bennington Battle Monument.

The Bennington Battle Monument, located at 15 Monument Circle (near West Main St./Route 9) in Bennington, Vermont (an approximately six-hour drive from Buffalo), is the tallest man-made structure in Vermont: the stone obelisk stands at 306 feet. It commemorates the Battle of Bennington (August 17th, 1777) during the Revolutionary War, which was actually fought 10 miles away in New York State.

The monument’s cornerstone was laid in 1877, and the monument itself is made from Sandy Hill dolomite from Hudson Falls, New York. An elevator takes visitors to the observatory some 200 feet from the ground – from there, on a clear day, one can see parts of Vermont, New York and Massachusetts.

The monument is open April 16th through October 31st from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; admission is $2 for adults, $1 for kids ages 6 to 14, and free for kids 5 and under – tickets are available at the gift shop across the street from the monument.
