While the amateur adult clubs were granted an off weekend to participate in the 2013 Fort Lauderdale Ruggerfest, collegiate rugby clubs across Florida took to the fields this past Saturday afternoon for matches used to determine which team will win the 2013 Spring Collegiate Florida Cup.
At the time of publication, results from four of this weekend’s men’s matches and one of the women’s matches had trickled into the Tampa Bay Rugby Examiner. This includes games from all three rugby conferences represented across the Florida Peninsula.
Reports from Saturday’s SIRC matches
In Southern Independent Rugby Conference (SIRC), the University of South Florida (USF) Bulls hosted the University of Central Florida (UCF) Knights in Tampa, Fla. Further down the state in Boca Raton, Fla., the Florida Atlantic University (FAU) Owls host the Florida State University (FSU) Seminoles.
The outcome between the USF Bulls and UCF Knights differed little from the first meeting between the clubs in early January (66-5). The final score was UCF 37 to USF 3.
The score in the match between the FAU Owls and the FSU Seminoles was much closer. In this game, the Seminoles went on to defeat the Owls by a score of 23 to 19.
UF beats VU in SCRC play
The University of Florida (UF) Gators traveled to Nashville, Tenn. Saturday afternoon to take on the Vanderbilt University (VU) Commodores. In the end, the Gators defeated the Commodores 21 to 15.
UNF defeats AMU in NSCRO matchup
The Ave Maria University (AMU) Papists hosted the perennial National Small College Rugby Organization (NSCRO) powerhouse club, the University of North Florida Deadbirds in a "battle of the unbeatens" this past Saturday afternoon in Ave Maria, Fla.. Though the Papists kept the score close, UNF ultimately defeated AMU 27 to 18.
UCF Lady Knights claim victory over FSU Lady Seminoles
The UCF Lady Knights hosted the FSU Lady Seminoles in USA Rugby South Women’s Collegiate Championship Saturday afternoon in Orlando. The match remained close, but the Lady Knights defeated the Lady Seminoles with a final score of 27 to 24.
