The Tour of Missouri is the country’s last major stage race of the season. The weeklong race begins Monday in St. Louis and continuing through Sept. 13 in Kansas City.
The scheduled field is strongest in the race’s three-year history and will include defending titlist Christian Vande Velde (Garmin-Slipstream), three-time consecutive Tour of California winner Levi Leipheimer (Astana) and 13-time Tour de France finisher George Hincapie (Columbia-HTC) — the race’s inaugural winner.
A half-dozen teams that participated in the Tour de France will race and three of the world’s best sprinters, Mark Cavendish (Columbia-HTC), Heinrich Haussler (Germany) and Thor Hushovd (Norwway), both of the Cervelo TestTeam will also compete.
As the National Cycling Examiner, I’ll be reporting on the event daily from St. Louis to Kansas, stage recaps to rider profiles, notes and quotes from each day of racing to human-interest stories.
