Ex-Penn State, Iowa State wrestler Andrew Long arrested yet again

Andrew Long, former Iowa State wrestler who transferred to Penn State, then left school before the start of this season, has been arrested yet again early Wednesday morning.

According to the Des Moines Register, Long, 22, was charged with one count of serious assault, one count of simple assault, public intoxication and interference with official acts by the Ames (Iowa) Police Department.

The Ames Tribune reported that police were called to Micky’s Irish Pub, 109 Welch Ave., at approximately 12:51 a.m. Wednesday when Long wouldn’t leave the bar. Police records show that the police stopped Long a few minutes after he left the bar. Long refused a “chemical test,” according to police reports.

It was Long's third alcohol-related arrest in Ames, home to Iowa State. After being dismissed from the Cyclones for violations of team rules, the Creston, Iowa native enrolled at Penn State, but left school before fall classes began. Back in Pennsylvania, Long currently faces charges of attempted rape, aggravated indecent assault and indecent assault in an incident involving the mother of a fellow student in State College, Pa. last August.

Wrestling for the Nittany Lions last season as a sophomore, Long placed third in the 133-pound bracket at the 2011 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships two weeks after winning the 2011 Big Ten title. He had transferred to Penn State in December 2010 after two years at Iowa State, where he was runner-up at 125 pounds at the 2010 NCAAs, losing to cross-state rival Matt McDonough of University of Iowa in the finals. Long had been dismissed from the Cyclones in June 2010 for violations of team rules. Prior to this latest arrest, Long had been arrested twice on alcohol-related charges while enrolled at Iowa State -- once in 2009, then again in April 2010.
