Ex-NFL player, Paul Oliver, has been found dead with a self-inflicted gunshot wound at his home in the suburbs of Atlanta. The former NFL player for the San Diego Chargers was 29-years-old. The medical examiner has ruled Oliver’s death as a suicide by handgun, according to CNN on Sept. 25.
Oliver’s body was found in his Marietta, Cob County home at the bottom of a flight of stairs. It was a family member who found his body and called 911, Cobb County police spokesman Sgt. Dana Pierce said that the medical examiner gave police authorization to release Oliver’s cause of death.
Oliver played defensive back at the University of Georgia before going to the NFL to plan for the San Diego Chargers. He played for the chargers from 2007 to 2011. His record indicates he had 144 tackles in 57 games.
A written statement from the NFL team said:
"Everyone in the Chargers family is sad today after hearing the news about Paul. He was part of our family for five years. At just 29 years old, he still had a lifetime in front of him. Right now all of our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this most difficult time."
Oliver is one of several recorded suicides among former NFL players over the past few years. Hip Hop Wired, in an article from last year, lists 10 other former NFL players that have committed suicide in recent years:
O.J. Murdock was a wide receiver for the Tennessee Titans. He was found dead in his car in a high school parking lot in late July of 2012. He was 25.
Jovan Belcher, a linebacker for the Kansas City Chiefs, killed his girlfriend before killing himself in December of 2012.
Kenny McKinley died in 2010 of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Ray Easterling, a safety of the Atlantic Falcons, committed suicide in April of 2012.
Dave Duerson killed himself in February of 2012. He died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest. A former player for the Chicago Bears, Phoenix Cardinals, and New York Giants, he was 50-year-old.
Junior Seau is another suicide victim who died of a self –inflicted gunshot wound. His body was found inside his Southern California home in the summer of 2012.
Michael Current was found dead in an Oregon wildlife refuge in 2012. He was facing molestation allegations that could have sent him to prison for 30 years. Current, played for the Denver Broncos, and the Miami Dolphins.
Shane Dronett committed suicide seven years after retiring from the NFL. He had played for the Denver Broncos, the Detroit Lions, and the Atlanta Falcons. Dronett committed suicide seven years after retiring from the league. In 2009 he went after his wife with a gun, she ran away and he turned the gun on himself.
Andre Waters was found dead inside his home in Tampa, Fla. in 2006. Waters was 44, he played 12 seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles.
Terry Long killed himself by drinking antifreeze in 2005. He played right guard for the Pittsburgh Steelers from 1984 to 1991.
Kurt Crain He shot himself in April of 2012. He played for the Houston Oilers. After the NFL he went on to become a coach for the University of South Alabama.
