Of the half-dozen former college wrestlers competing at UFC 126: Silva vs Belfort Saturday night in Las Vegas, four came out of the Octagon as winners.
In fact, the only ex-collegiate matmen to come out losers, lost to fellow college wrestlers.
Here's what happened to the UFC 126 combatants who have college wrestling credentials:
- In a battle of ex-college grapplers, Jon Jones -- a junior college champ at Iowa Central Community College -- submitted former Arizona State All-American Ryan Bader with a guillotine choke at 4:20 in the second round.
- Jake Ellenberger -- wrestler, now assistant coach, at NCAA Division II defending champ University of Nebraska-Omaha -- earned a split decision over Carlos Eduardo Rocha.
- Chad Mendes -- 2009 NCAA Division I finalist from Cal Poly -- got a unanimous decision over Michihiro Omigawa.
- In a match-up of combatants who once wrestled at schools that no longer offer wrestling, Mike Pierce (Portland State) scored a TKO by punches over Kenny Robertson (Eastern Illinois University) at 29 seconds into Round 2.
