A former church youth director was sentenced Tuesday to 10 years in prison for distributing images of children being sexually abused and taking pictures of them to gratify himself, federal officials said.

Mr. Kevin Hickey, 39, of Atlanta was the youth director and director of Parish Outreach for Life Teen International, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

“This defendant was entrusted with counseling and protecting children, but instead collected and distributed highly graphic images portraying their sexual exploitation and abuse” U.S. Attorney Mrs. Sally Yates said. “We will to continue to aggressively prosecute those who pose such a great threat to our children.”

In June 2013, prosecutors said Mr. Hickey, using his online screen name “funguyatl77,” communicated online that he was watching “perving vids” and offered to share child pornography.

“He transmitted a video showing two prepubescent males being sodomized by an adult male,” Mrs. Yates said. “Hickey further displayed photographs of children he took surreptitiously in public places and was heard gratifying himself sexually during the online conversation.”

Homeland Security Investigations agents tracked down Mr. Hickey to his home, where they found thousands of images of child exploitation on his electronic devices.

Mr. Hickey was sentenced to ten years in prison to be followed by lifetime supervised release.

He was ordered to pay $1,000 in restitution, and a $100 special assessment fee. He will also be required to register as a sex offender when he is released from prison.
